Frequent Asked Questions
What process did you use?
We based ourselves on feedback from people and on studies by researchers freely available on the Internet. See below a list of a few research documents:
- Comparison of Impulse Response Methods for Guitar Modeling
- Comparison of violin impulse responses by listening to convoluted signals
- Non-impulsive signal deconvolution for computation of violin impulse responses
- Impulse Response Modeling of the Box Shaped Acoustic Guitar
- Violin Impulse Response Length and Perceptions of Acceptability
Based on these elements, several tests were carried out in different situations and using different devices. The final measurements depend on each musical instrument. Indeed, we did not always use the same devices, particularly regarding microphones and Analog-to-Digital converters. This is why our packages offer several versions of files for the same impulse response.
The process is essentially based on two separate captures of the source signal of the instrument produced in an anechoic room. It is an experimental room whose walls absorb sound and electromagnetic waves. The two signals are then sampled and correlated to generate an impulse response using a deconvolution process.
What devices did you use for the recording?
We used several microphones and pickups, including Telefunken, Audio Technica, Shure and Neumann mics. We tried to apply everytime the same process. But the conditions can’t be always the same.
If you are looking for some precise microphone names, here are a non-exhaustive list: Shure SM57, Neumann U87, Neumann U47, AKG C414, Telefunken TF51, Neumann KM184, Audio Technica ATM 250DE.
Why does your archive file contain multiple versions of an IR?
Each Impulse Response was captured in different ways. We used different mics, pickups, etc. We also did different mixs per IR. That’s why each Impulse Response file is available in multiple versions. Please test them in order to find the Impulse Response file that best suits your needs.
IR files are also encoded in different sample rates : 44.1 KHz, 48 kHz and 96 kHz (24 bit). Some software does not support all bitrates. Therefore, we offer different formats to suit all types of software or effects processors.
Which devices are compatible with the files?
Our Impulse Response files work with all devices that accept third-party IR files in wav format.
For your information, wav format is an audio file format standard for storing an audio bitstream.
How do I open the downloaded file?
Impulse Response files are contained within an archive file (called also a zip file). You have to unzip it with the appropriate software on your computer. Once unzipped, all the files will be visible. They are stored into a relevant folder.
How do I use your IR file?
An Impulse Response file needs to apply to an audio signal by using a digital process. This step can be done by several devices like an IR loader, a plugin or an FX processor.
If you don’t know anything about Impulse Response files and their application, please read first this page. We know it’s a lot of information, but it will help you to understand: How it works? What is it for? And how to use it?
Do your files work as a plugin?
No. Don’t confuse VST plugin with IR file. You can use IR files with a suitable VST plugin installed on your DAW. But an IR file is not a plugin. You need a software interface (like a plugin) or a device (like an IR loader) that can use an IR file. Please read our explanation here about Impulse Responses.
What are your files for extended range instruments?
There are instruments with more strings than usual. For example, it is possible to play a 5-string acoustic violin, a 7-string electric violin, or even a 6-string electric cello. Having more than 4 strings, these instruments have a wider sound spectrum. IR files dedicated to such instruments aggregate the acoustic fingerprint of the different strings used. We captured them by using an acoustic version of the musical instruments (it is such the case for the 5-string violin) or by creating a mix between different Impulse Responses.
I would like to record the IR of my own musical instrument?
We receive this type of request regularly. Unfortunately, this activity is not our main activity. We have professional obligations in parallel taking many time. Please contact us, and we will see if it is possible.
After my payment, I don't find the Impulse Response files
Please check first that your payment was validated by our secured payment system. You should receive an order confirmation by email.
After the order payment, the download of your files should start automatically. If it doesn’t, you can download the files from your account. After the connection to your account, please visit the Downloads tab to get your IR files.
If you still did not find a way to download your files, do not hesitate to write us.
Can I endorse your products?
We are not actively seeking out endorsements, but if you are interested, please contact us.
Can I get a refund after purchase?
These files are digital goods. Therefore, they are not refundable after purchase.
