More questions
What is a violin Impulse Response?
A violin Impulse Response is a capture of the ‘acoustic characteristics of the violin’ and its environment. The characteristics and tone are contained into an audio file representing a sound impulse. With the help of a dedicated tool, this file must be integrated into a source audio signal to simulate the acoustic characteristics of the captured violin. If you want to know more about how impulse responses work, please refer to our article.
How to use an Impulse Response file?
There are several devices for using these IR files: your DAW (Ableton, Cubase, ProTools and more) and its integrated or third-party VST plugins, an effects processor or an IR loader pedal. You will upload the Impulse Response file into the unit, and it will apply the IR characteristics to your audio signal.
Can I use these Impulse Response files with a viola? with an electric violin?
The frequency differences between a viola and a violin are minimal. So acoustic violin Impulse Response files work with violas, and vice versa.
Regarding electric violins, of course, it is working! By applying an IR file to your electric violin signal, you will benefit from the acoustic tone of the captured violin. Today, it is the best solution to get closer to the natural tone of an acoustic violin with an electric violin!
How are Impulse Response files made?
The process of creating Impulse Response files is not identical for all elements (cabs vs acoustic instruments vs environments). Creating Impulse Responses for amps and speakers is relatively simple because the process involves sending an impulse, capturing it, and analyzing it to create an IR file. In the case of acoustic instruments, the process is much more complex as it involves many more elements: the acoustic instrument, the capture microphone, the pickup used, the environement, etc. In order to get good IR files, it has to be done by respecting a specific process and using profesional devices.
